injection pump r&r

I need some knowledge. My injection pump is pissing fuel all over my engine compartment, it is leaking on the backside opposite the KSB. I believe that there is an o ring there that has failed. I need to know if it's possible to remove the pump without locating TDC on the motor to begin with. If i lock the pump shaft is it possible to insert the pump back into the same position after removing it? Do i need to locate TDC first then lock both the motor and the pump shaft so as to insure that they line up properly? Thanks in advance for any assistance or knowledge anyone is willing to share.

You will be fine as long as you lock the shaft before pulling the pump, just be careful with the key.

So as long as i don't rotate the motor, the gear will remain in the same position?

You don't even have to lock the IP.....just remove and do your re-seal and install, as long as you have not rotated the motor at all then you just line the key on the IP to the gear and install. But having said that be careful that the woodruff key stays in place when installing, and doing it this way it can also be a bit of a PITA sometimes especially if the line up point on the IP is between, or just near one of the cam roller overs internally.....can make it tough to get the keyway lined up perfectly and then locked down for install. But with all the IP's I have re/re'd this has only happened once for me and I had to take the front timing cover off to manipulate the timing gear easier and get it everything assembled, but just thought I would let you know what else could happen.
