lift pump killing injection pump

ok heres my story

98.5 24v totally stock 120k

driving down the road to work the truck coughed once and then everything seemed fine.

when restarting after work it started right up but idled real rough.
no smoke or anything and we drive home.

next morning no start no nothing. engine cranks but will not start.
I figure out that the lift pump has died ( the impeller has come loose from the shaft )

I replace the lift pump and filter, purge the air out of the system and still nothing. little or no fuel at the injectors.

so, riddle me this batman, is my IP (vp-44?) fried? or is there some other really cheap fix?

thanx

I cycled the lift pump 3 or 4 times to bleed the air out and when it woulnt start then I cracked #1,3,4,5 injector lines.

Welcome cheng. Did you by chance find out if you have any codes? Some trucks you can cycle the key on and off three times and pull the codes. Some you can't. I don't know which ones are which, but if you fill in your sig. you can get more precise help. Once you get the codes (if there are any) you can look here and it might help: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...n&onlynewfaq=1

Loosen the banjo bolt at the vp44 and cycle the key till fuel gushes out. Tighten it. Loosen three injector lines, crank on it till fuel flows out all three. If one is flowing you can close it right a way and crank till the others come up. Just a little wetness does not mean they are bled, they need to flow pretty good. This is about all you can do. I have had a couple of occasions that it still took some cranking to get it going, but this is the sequence. Make sure the battery is high, makes a big difference.

If it has fuel at the injector lines the vp should be ok. Best to read the codes if you have problems though.

It took me a really long time, like almost an hour to get all the air out of the injector lines. It is also really important to have 2 people while doing this. One to crank, the other to open and close the injectors. I found that in the time it took me run around the truck I was getting air back into the lines. Keep at it.
