Injection pump is pouring
Injection pump is pouring
Alrighty. I noticed that my fuel miliage was getting bad but didn't pay it no mind (lead foot). I changed my oil this morning and noticed that at idle I'm pouring fuel out the bottem of my IP. I went out looking for the exact spot it's leaking from but can't quite put my finger on it. At first glance it looks like it's coming out from the lower (left side from the front of the truck) bolt hole on the botter of the truck.
But as I went looking and reading I realize that there aint no way that fuel gets to this hole. So maybe just maybe it's coming from here...

Between where the Pump Housing and the Hydraulic Head. I had to use the diagram to get that termanology. lol. How would I go about finding for sure before I pull the IP. I don't wanna pull this thing and replace a seal that's still good ya know?

Short of getting in there with a mirror or twisting into a pretzel, no way to be sure that it coming from there. Could be the FSS and then running down? Try and wipe it clean and dry as best you can, then fire it up and get looking.
But if your pulling the IP then you may as well re-seal the whole thing. Not worth re-sealing a few O-rings and then having to pull it again in 6 months to do another one or two seals.
You can get a complete re-seal kit under DGK-121 or look on E-bay under "VE pump seal kit" or "VE pump rebuild kit" should find you something.

maybe I'm just slow on the computers and searches. I looked on Amazon and Ebay for 3 hours and found gaskets for 318's and 360's but nothing for the Cummins. Teach me your Ebay magic!! lol

...I've been an E-bay addict for years. I've learned how to search....
Here are the seals you'd get....
The one on the left is the spacer to position the seal at the right depth. The one on the right is the actual crank seal.
There is a good write up in the sticky on how to do this seal on your timing cover. It's a little more difficult then a V8 but not too bad.
May I recommend if you are buying the front crank seal buy the one with the wear sleeve, if Your crank is worn where the seal rides then You'll have an oil leak soon after replacing it. I'm not sure about other brands but cummins sells this seal, all you need is the serial # on Your engine to make sure it will fit.
I used a piece of a retaining spring from a end cap from when I replaced the u-joints. I cut it to fit and works great. Got the whole front appart and got the IP off yesterday. I took the hydralic plate off the main body and replaced that seal. Getting it all back together was a major pain in the tail. I'm working on getting into it so I can put in the 3200 RPM spring and gonna nip off the end of that fuel cut off lever. Wish me luck fellas. If yall got any little advice for little mods while I'm in there hit me with the good word please. I'm also taking the cover and crimpings off the fuel screw so I can tune that when I get it all back together.
OH...... The Denny T stage 2 fuel pinis on the way too. Forget to mention that. Got a fella making me a set of 75 HP injectors that should be done around the first or shortly after. Next step is a turbo.
