Improved rear drum brakes? Front upgrades?
Improved rear drum brakes? Front upgrades?
Hi all, i'm wondering if there is an improvement that can be made to the rear drums on our trucks like the newer 94+ by adding a new part from the gm trucks ( forget what the part's called)?
How about upgrading the front brakes-is there anything else out there that's bolt on that came on a newer/different truck that would improve over what i have now?
I know you could prep the breaks with better pads, rotors and possibly lines, but i'm talking about larger calipors or maybe a twin piston calipor that would bolt on from napa.

i used dodge 1 ton slaves for my 90.the slaves were 1/8" larger and bolted right in no mods just needed to get the brake line to fit (bend just a little) i think the slaves were in the $25 range not sure any more

But you are right.
They are like $12 each.

What year/model/make do i order for?
Thanks

Is the GM 1-ton wheel-cylinder bigger/better than what I already have??
I have never heard of this upgrade before.
Thanks.
If you have 3" brake shoes its a good chance you already have the larger cylinders.
The D70 used in the Dodges is the same for the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks as far as the drums go. The 250's use 2.5' where the 350's had 3". The only ones that are different are some of the late 80's 2x4's. When you get brake parts just get the parts for a 350 series truck with the 5500 lb rear axle in the same year as yours. Turn the ridge out of the drums for the 3" shoes or get new drums. The MC's are the same for both setups and don't forget the small parts package.
The upgrade works pretty well if the ABS is good. Not as good as the 3rd gens but quite a bit better than stock.

do you run into any problems with the rears locking up to easily if you are not loaded down in the rear?
My abs has never engaged so I don't think it works. The light is not on though so maybe it has been unhooked already before I bought the truck.
