I also have this question.

I bought my truck already modded and have been able to ID most everything the guy did to it except the turbo. I know it helps the pros on this sight to know what we have when we have questions and Id like to add it to my profile.

how do I identify what turbo I have?

The tag ID will work as long as it is not just a compressor upgrade. I put a GDS compressor upgrade on my turbo and there is no tag to ID it with.

You're not gonna want a stock hx50 from the junkyard or ebay. Won't bolt up, won't spool up (very good), won't make any HP in the rpm limited VE pump etc etc. The only one you would remotely be interested in is one of the Holset performance HX50's, known as the Pro52. You won't find it on anything in the junkyard. It's a performance charger designed to be used with the 5.9 Cummins. Available only from a Holset dealer/distributor or diesel site classifieds. Even then its iffy on making VE power.

The ONLY chargers you should be looking for from the junkyard is the hx40 with a 16cm wastegated housing or a s300 with a T3 bolt up turbine housing. Both are rare and hard to find in a junkyard because they are only used on newer models. The hx40-16 being found on the 8.3L C-series 24 valve Cummins. Most C-series you'll come across will be 12 valves with much less desireable T4 non-bolt up massive turbine housings. 18, 19, 21cm wastegated and non. Don't waste your time or money on these. The s300 will be on a 3126 Cat. Most of the ones I've come across have the T4 turbine housing and slip boot compressor housings though. Like I said, it's hard to find a good bolt on charger that will work well with a VE motor in the junkyard.

To answer your question on how to measure compressor and turbine wheels. You'll need a dial caliper. The smallest measurement on each wheel is the number you want.

yeah my compressor is upgraded for sure, I have a box of all the old parts and havent had time to really look them up.

I know its a holset and I think he said its a HTT stage 2 upgrade (does that sound right?)

It wales out close to 40psi if I let it... has a BHAF too and 4" all the way out.

thanks again.

Excellent post! If there was an abundance of turbos laying around in the junkyard that worked well, vendors wouldn't be able to get $1500 - $2k for ones that work.
