Yep, the pump shop had the slightly longer fuel screw, with a new O ring for $17. Lubed it with white lithium, put that in as far as it would turn, and advanced the timing.
I think I need to dial the fuel screw back down a few turns. It idles pretty high no matter what I do with the idle screw, and when I drive it, the RPMs don't come right down after I let off the pedal, they hang somewhat before coming down.
Sure is fast, though.

OK, unscrewed the fuel screw around two turns. I found it was easier to move it with a little 6mm box end wrench than a screwdriver.
Still idles too high, but drives OK and the RPMs come down normally. Gonna fine tune it more later.
It's definitely faster with the timing bump and the slightly longer screw. Thanks again for that part number.
Unfortunately, third gear still loses power while revving the motor too high above 35mph, which is too slow for 4th. Above 40mph, that truck is really really fast, and this much I'm pretty happy with thus far.

Glad to see it still is a good part number. It was written on a peice of paper in our "Diesel performance stuff" box down in the basement.

This was before the longer fuel screw though.
Are you suggesting moving it back one mark clockwise to where it was before, at the first mark from the right ?

Oh, when I said "clockwise" and "counterclockwise" I was referring to the line on the end of the throttle shaft, not the "dial" on the linkage that goes down on top of the shaft.

Moved the throttle shaft one mark clockwise. Won't start. So I put it back to the second mark over, it starts, but still rough idle...can't find the sweet spot like I had before. Guess I'll turn the fuel down more...

what do you mean 35 is too fast for 4th gear? I am screaming at 35 in 3rd gear. I am actually thinking about 5th gear at 40 if I don't have to accelerate fast. I have a 5spd with 355's too.

At 35mph in 3rd, the motor is revving way, way too high...it's that space in between 30 and 40mph that gives me so much trouble with proper gearing.
I usually shift into 5th above about 60mph or so.
Anyway, it's idling much better now, at least. Turned that fuel screw right back down.

Do you have a tach? If you have 4:10's then it will be different, but otherwise 35mph isn't really revving the engine very high, maybe around 2200 rpms, I tow up passes at that rpm grossing 16k for 20 minutes. I'll wrap it up to 3k before I shift to 4th, now when you start turning 3200+ now thats SCREAMING. not including drag/pullers...
