Hi, I’m swapping a HX35 from a 99 model pickup in place of my baby H1C. Everything has gone smoothly until I tried to connect my down pipe to the flange on the turbo. The flange on the HX35 is quite a bit thicker than the flange on the baby H1C and my v band clamp is not wide enough to fit over the pipe flange and the turbo flange. I happened to have another v band clamp and it’s the same story with it as well. Is there a wider clamp that I can buy or what is my problem? The flange on the pipe seems thick to me but this is the first Cummins of this era I’ve had the turbo off of. Most of my experience is with newer 5.9s. I added a picture of my clamp, that is with the pipe snug against the flange of the turbo. If anybody can help me out I’d appreciate it.
New one on me. I think the easiest option is to either replace the exhaust flange on the turbo or have that one milled down. I'm sure there are wider clamps out there but finding the correct part number won't be easy. Call around the diesel performance shops, they may have what you need.
Not sure what your problems is and the picture does not answer my questions.
I have personally installed 24v turbos on at least four of my 1st gens. You do need to change out the down pipe adapter to the style that has the clamp on flange like you have done already.
I will add a couple more pictures. I apologize for the quality but trying to hold everything in place with one hand and take a picture with the other, well you get the idea. In the pics it looks like there is a gap between the flange and the pipe but it is lined up perfectly and pressed together, no gap. I work on ag equipment for a living and most of the down pipes on those have a single layer of metal where it meets the turbo flange but this one has a fairly thick flange on the pipe as well as the turbo flange is thicker than the old one. The lip on the HX35 flange measures .244” at the edge and the baby H1C measures .185”
