How much is safe without an EGT?

Anyone know of a safe turned up setting that one can run w/o an egt? I'm going to order an EGT, but I can't wait, I gotta crank her up a bit to see if I can break this new trans! haha

Crank her up, and dont tow, or stay on the skinny pedal up steep hille from stop to 100+mph
After you flog the truck, let er sit and idal for a couple of minutes and cool off before shutting down
Many of us here have EGT gauges, and i have pegged 1500* more times than i know, just let the engine cool before shutting down, and dont tow!
If you have an auto, you can keep it too high for longer times.
There are many of us here, with a gauge that still run right up to 14-1500 while playing.
Peter.

Nothing is "safe" EGT-wise after you start turning up the pump. That's why pyros are stongly recommended. That said however, short high temp bursts are unlikely to cause damage. Short, meaning a few seconds. Be afraid. I'm sure someone will chime in and crucify me for this ill-advised statement.

You would be surprised just how much you can do before EGT's become a concern. I had my pump vertually maxed out, except and ol smokey pin. and couldnt hit 1000* unless I tried! Even then, I had to really lug it, or be doin 90 with it to the boards! But I also installed a 4" DP really before anything was done to the IP.

BUT, each truck is different. Personally, Id run the star wheel to the bottom, maybe a turn on the smoke screw, a turn on the fuel screw, 3200 spring, bump the timing, turn the fuel pin deep. That should be alright, but each truck is different. Im also young, dumb, and fulla.. well u get the point!

lol, no crusifiction nessecary ACE!

A friend and member of DTR has a melted piston out of his engine sitting on his desk at work because he did not have a pyrometer in his exhaust.

129.00 for the pyro(new) give or take a few.

2000.00 for an engine(used) give or take a few.

Its a useful tool to have on the truck anyhow. Just do it.

i have to agree with the later opinions... we can all say it PROBABLY won't hurt it but here's the simple fact... each of these pumps respond so different that one persons experience or even five doesn't mean a thing. If you mess with the fuel before a pyro you are asking for trouble... murphy will be waiting! show some self control, believe me i know it's hard. i had one slightly bombed truck that became my wife's and i had to drive mine for over 6 months with no gauges, killed me not to touch the setting when i knew what it would do but like moparmarv said.... engines aren't cheap!

Well, the plan was to order an EGT, trans temp and boost gauge, so I'll just wait... I did take the fuel diaphraghm apart just to see what it's like and turned stuff up ever so slightly, I can't wait to start crankin it up- the trans is begging for more power!

Gonna have to open up the air path and bigger injectors to get the power out of the 1st Gen. Have the pump calibrated to the high side, 3200 spring and youll be smiling ear to ear.

It's extreemly risky. Guages are cheap...new or used engines and or parts not. I highly recommend them. Jethrro

Agree, nothing is safe. You can melt a turbo in a heartbeat.

I got my pyro installed this weekend. I put it in the yellow (1050*-1250*) pretty easily unloaded WOT for about 10 seconds. I'm now considering the timing bump to try to lower those just a bit. I can cruise at 75mph, 5th gear and run about 650*-700*. Is that about right? or not?

Yepp. sounds good to me. Pre or post turbo location on the pyro probe?

Pre-turbo. I don't really care how hot it is after the turbo...I just don't want to fry the turbo itself so I went pre-turbo. It was a little scary to drill into the manifold but it all worked out fine.
So those numbers sound OK?
I haven't pulled out travel trailer with it on there yet so we'll see where they go in a couple of weeks. I hoping not in the RED ZONE!!!

BTW I looked at your pics and I see your master cylinder cover is leaking too. Anyone know how to stop that? I put some rubber under the gasket to make it fit tighter but it still leaks some.
