Higher Geared Rear-End?

My pickup has the 3.54? rear end. I'd like to replace it and put an even steeper geared one in. Looking for a little better fuel mileage etc... Does anyone know of any? I would like something right around a 3.00 And how many dollars would this run me? Thanks for any help.

Many automatics came with a 3.08 ratio.

Another thing you could like into is a gear splitter/ auxilliary over- or under- drive. It's a much more flexible solution, but more expensive.

Or you could always get bigger tires.

You would have to change the entire axle and get a 3:07 if yours is 3:54. The parts are not interchangeable. No point in doing it unless your was bad and somebody gave you a 3:07 axle, because the important parts can't be replaced anymore.

Hey Begle1, I saw on your info that you have a tach. Not trying to throw the thread off track but how did you go about installing that?

Our 1990 trucks don't have tach sensors built in from the factory, so we have to get more creative.

My tachometer, which is the most popular one available for our trucks, is the Autometer 2888 (I guess now they call it a 2697, though...).

http://www.autometer.com/cat_gaugede...earch&gid=3239

Mine came with a electro-field-sensor thingie that you stick to your alternator with a big radiator clamp. The alternator sends out electric pulses at a certain number of times every engine RPM; after you attach the sensor, you use an optical tachometer to find you engine RPM while it's idling, and then you use a **** on the back of the tachometer to adjust the engine speed to that level. So if the optical tachometer reads 800 RPM at idle, you turn the little **** until the tachometer says 800 RPM, and then the reading is accurate all the way through the power band.

Since Autometer seems to have restructured their parts database, I don't know if the alternator sensor still comes with the tach. Call whoever you order the tachometer from to ensure that it isn't sold seperately.

Here is the sensor that clamps to your alternator.

And here is the tachometer as I installed it on my dash.

And now, back to the scheduled programming...

AFAIK, the correct part # for the alt. tach is 2888, or 3788 if you want a white face model.

Excellent post, Begle1.

Excellent post, Begle1.
Ahh, it was 2888...

But their website says it's 2697 now, so who knows?

And Dave the First Gen Messiah said I made a good post! Woo-hoo! Does that mean I'm a useful member now?

Glad to be of service...

Do you have a 5 speed or auto? If auto you already have 3.08 gears.

D'oh! I'm not gonna argue with AutoMeter.

Begle1, I'll settle for minor prophet status, say on the level of Ezekiel or Hezekiah.
