Heavy Smoke

Well, I did the "moving the throttle linkage" mod this afternoon. Also backed the high idle screw out until it was flush. While I was under the hood I backed the smoke screw out a turn, maybe a turn and a half because I didn't like how much smoke it was putting out when I took off from a dead start towing a loaded trailer. Took off down the road towing an empty trailer, maybe 1200 lbs. Stomped on it from about 35 m.p.h. and blew out the thickest black smoke I have ever seen, all the way up to 60 m.p.h. After driving it several more miles, I did the same thing. This time it was grayish and not as thick. What gives? Why would it smoke more after backing the smoke screw out? Could moving the throttle linkage have anything to do with that? I haven't blown it out like that in a while. Ideas anyone? By the way, I like the pedal feel now.

If you've just been puttering around for a long time and then romp on it, it will blow a lot of loose soot out and look smokier.

When I still had a turndown tip on the truck I could leave a soot stripe on the road.

You don't think it could have anything to do with moving the throttle linkage, do you?

i highly doubt it- it doesnt seem plausible how moving the throttle linkage could affect that at all

i dont know much but someone who does will clear this up

maybe she just needed to be cleaned out?

If you weren't getting full travel on the linkage previously and corrected the issue you could technically produce more smoke by putting it to the floor. Previously the engine's rpm's were topped out by the high idle screw. Now with full travel you are getting the the full fuel load possible when you mash the accelerator .. more fuel + same amount of air = more smoke then before. Thats my guess anyway

That's what I was thinking. Moving that linkage and backing out the high idle screw seems like it would allow the throttle to advance further around. You don't think I'm getting enough air?

Yeah, stock injectors. I tried it again today and the smoke wasn't as heavy, and it went from black initially to gray. But it's still heavier smoke than I had before.
