Weak low end and heavy smoke

My truck has recently started running very sluggish when I try to take off from a complete stop. the engine seems to struggle to spool up then it belches a large cloud of black smoke and takes off. I first started noticing this problem after a long tow. It just started running real rough anytime I stopped with it in gear. Kinda seems like the TC is holding too tight. I can easily make it stall out by bumping the throttle and letting off real quick. As I said before it is at it's worst when I've been towing for a while and come to a stop. It seems to get a little better after a few days of not towing but it still seem to shudder a little when stopped in gear. Could it be a fueling problem as well?
I've also noticed that the fuel mileage seems to have gone down recently.

Sounds like the way mine acted when mice removed the insulation under the hood and stuffed the airbox full of it...

have you checked the fuel return pressure regulator on the return line comming off the injection pump, have had trucks act that way when the spring inside the regulator gets weak. but from the sounds of it i'd start with basics, change fuel filter, air filter, check for any fuel leaks allowing air into fuel system, and check injection pump timing. Or possibly look for a waste gate problem or boost pressure leak.

Ok I know the airfilter is good and my waste gate has been blocked off since the #10 plate. I once had a boost pressure leak right after blocking the waste gate. It made one heck of a squeal. I fixed that but I guess it could be leaking again but not sqealing. I'll try changing the fuel filter and see what that does first the move on to the other suggestions.

Sounds like your AFC might have gotten out of whack.. Check that the AFC arm has free travel on its shaft, and make sure your AFC housing is properly positioned.

Boost leak?

A tight TC will also cause turbos to spool slower.

My TC caused my truck to spool slower. It has a slight bog or hesitation when taking off hard. It will pull good if you ease into the throttle and give it time to build boost but it does pretty much the same as what you describe except the mileage. I get 15-16 around town and 20 on road. This is in my 97. Do you guys think I have a problem with the AFC? How can I check it?
