I've said this before and I'll say it again, for all you guys with the timing advanced a little and towing with sustained egt's in the 1200F range, even though your temp looks safe the extra timing keeps the heat in on the piston and rings longer and you can scuff a bore.

What should be the max egt with a 1/8 timing bump?

Don't be scared to run against the govenor that's what it is on there for, when the pyro starts going up toasty back off or drop a gear, if you drop a gear mash on it and just repeat the above till you top out the hill. The only thing to worry about is the EGT, don't lug, don't be afraid to run against the governor. I've seen diesels in irragation setups that run against the governor for days with no problems. Ya just gotta get over the gasser mentality and stand on the skinny pedal and drive by your gauges, let the engine work and let the gauges tell you what to do next. I'm not raggin on anybody but the ole diesels just have to have a different driving style to perform like they should.
Its like learning how to drive all over again. I guess what do I have to loose, two of my favorite things to do is work these trucks and work on them. Till the governor kicks in it will be. But you are right, gassier mentality is what I've got. As soon as those R's get up there, I swear my grandfather is still sitting next to me YELLING "SHIIIIIFT"!!

NICE SET UP. How long is that trailer? Mine has a 24' deck and yours looks like it could fit both my truck and trailer on it. Is that a IH 656? We have one that looks just like it. Couldn't see your truck real good in those pics. My favorite look for these trucks is the reg cab W350s and the ext cab W250s.

The trailer is actually my uncles, he just lets us use it. I think its a 32ft trailer but Im not sure. All I know is that it is really freakin heavy, as you see it in the pic I was 24,500 GVW. I didnt even have the weights on that tractor! Dad was around the same I think, maybe even heavier. The tractor on my truck is an 856 aka "The little 8" My dad had his newly purchased 756 on his. We didn't do to bad at the pulls I ended up with a 7th (even though I went 304ft!) and a 2nd in the 10500# class. My bro was middle of the pack with the 756. had a couple good hooks but we havent got it figured out quite yet, next year we'll have that one running strong too! As for the truck I like it a lot, The body style and the bed just work together. Still needs the rims painted and the body waxed but otherwise its perfect for what I wanted.

I be careful with sustained temps above 1150F when towing.

I don't have an intercooler and i never really see much over 1200* towing around my 4020 which is much heavier than what you've got there. Like most of the others said don't be afraid to wind er up.

14racing what does the ole 4020 weigh? I had one many many years ago and we were discussing it yesterday. Couldn't remember if it was around 12 or 14,000. Thanks

I was thinking it weighed 12/14,000 with water in the rear tires and a full suitcase of weights up front but I just don't remember.

I think an open station 4020 w/o fluid in the rears and a wide front should be around 9-10K. Not 100% but I know of at least 2 that I pull against in the 9500 & 10500# classes.
