Has anyone changed the rear axle hub retention nut/wedge to something different?
Anyone change to something different for spindle nut retention on the rear axle? Isn't our setup a Dodge only deal? If something else would be better, what else would fit? Opinions on setups? Thanks
. Maybe something reusable, I've heard of the Dodge stuff backing off too, I've heard it mentioned a few times on different forums.
My experiences with the single big nut and little lock-clip-wedge is that the nut is soft, thus allowing the bearing to eat it's way into the nut, thus loosening the bearing adjustment; this has happened on every single nut/wedge axle I have ever owned, Ford or Dodge.
Why do you think they have them hanging for sale in every parts store ??; and, they ain't cheap.
A far better solution is the good old tried and true double-nut/folding-tab lock-washer set-up.
I have several trucks and trailers with the double-nut system and have never ever had one wear out or fail in any way.
A 2-9/16 hex-nut goes against the bearing, then the folding-tab lock-washer, then the second hex-nut, then an "ear" of the lock-washer is bent over one of the hexes of the outer nut, thus locking it from backing off.

The good stuff is the top picture; the stock/original mess is the second picture.
Hope this helps.

My mid to late 70 Power Wagon's have that system. A new 2 9/16" socket designed for the single nut won't fit them
. A worn out one borrowed from a friend that's been beat onto that style nut in the past worked though.

BearKiller is right on, I noticed the wear on the nut the last time I had that PIA appart. I am also interested in the double nut bend over lock washer, no bend over price hopefully...

Their pricing is about as cheap as I have found anywhere; and believe me, I have been looking.
I have those on several late-sixties to mid-eighties Dana-equipped rears and trailer-axles.
Most Dana 60s have the same thread/size and the world used to be full of them.
I bought a bunch of brand-new military surplus 1978 Dodge Dana-60 rears and they had them.
I have a couple that have them, but the thread-size is odd and will not interchange with most of the others, even though the wheel-bearings are the same = JLM104949.
As far as I know, Ford and Dodge Dana-70s share the same spindle thread, along with most of the Dana-60s.
The son's W-250 has them on the front wheels.
I have a 2-9/16 spanner that so far has fit every hex-adjuster I have came across in a 3/4 or ton sized truck, be it Ford, Chevy, or Dodge; at least I think it's 2-9/16.
