Had to Settle
Did the oil coolant changes plus added a coolant filter bypass system. Truck works great. Have still been looking for a first gen though. A couple of close calls on some great deals but always a little late. Got my eyes on one now but cannot look at it tonight due to daughters highschool graduation. It will probably be gone by then. Oh well will keep looking. For some reason he wants that "Turbo Whistle".
You may be able to buy a turbo kit for it and wake it up.
I have had a few IDIs and were good engines in their own right- dependable to a point, good for a first time driver. Keep up with the coolant levels and SCA charge. Test strips are available to chech the condition.
Has the injector pump been rebuilt? If not, it may have a neoprene cam plate in the pump, which can wear (esp if it sits a while), and needs replacing. White smoke under load and gutlessness are signs of issues.

Congrats on the purchase, its no cummins, but dependable for sure!
I put half-a-million miles on the old 6.9 International, with Hypermax turbo, that came in my truck, before I swapped in the Cummins.
The 6.9 was running good as ever, the day I pulled it; it was just leaking oil out every possible place it could.
Seat of the pants feeling is that, in it's prime, the old turbo'ed 6.9, on rolling ground, would walk off from the Cummins; and, MAN, that old turbo would whistle.
That being said, in hilly ground, the Cummins is best, no comparison.
The Cummins also doubled my fuel mileage.
There are many old IDIs around here, that have so many miles on them that they have had to install electric fuel pumps, on account of the pump-drive cam being wore away on the cam-shaft and will no longer operate the mechanical pump.
