Grey smoke
Grey smoke
Ok, I finally got the beast running on its own. It acts like it is loading up or something. Lots of gray smoke and then it clears up. This motor is new to me with 173,000 miles on it. Any ideas?
When I first hit the throttle there is lots of grey smoke and it sputters. It clears up if I stay on the throttle. When I let off it does it all over again. At first I thought the engine hadn't warmed up enough but I don't think that's the case now.
I was wondering if it wasn't an injector. It seems to idle fine with no smoke. If you slowly bring the throttle up it smokes from about 1/4 throttle all the way up to WOT. If I rev it it sputters once and then puffs black smoke like normal every time I rev it.
Grey smoke is usually when a truck is so overfueled its gone from black to gray because there is so much fuel its almost putting out the fire. If you watch sled pulls, occasionally you will see a truck putting out dark grey smoke instead of black.. IE: too much fuel.
I would check the injectors for a cracked tip..

Sweet. What do I win?
But really I have been trough this on the wifes pile. I went about finding it with a air blower in the filler neck (about 10ish PSI) with a few rags wrapped around it to "seal" the air in. Mine ended up being the fuel heater gasket, and banjo seals. So rather than fixing all of that, I went with 3/8" line to Lp then 3/8" to a 1/2" adaptor to a duramax filter mounted to break booster via bracket. Then 1/2" to 3/8" hose to IP. Has worked out good for me so far. Need to figure out the heater side of it before we move to Cali.

Changed the turbo because there was oil in the housing and the tube from the intercooler. (Didn't fix the problem) I'm going to finish putting the truck together and go with the "run'er and watch'er" theory since the motor hasn't been really run for about 3 years, and it was standing on the rear main end for the winter while I changed pan gasket and valve cover gaskets and such. I am going to check the fuel pressure between the lp and the ip and see if that isn't the problem.
