Got a tranny question.
Got a tranny question.
Ok, I know I can shift without the clutch BUT, should I? I have done it at various times in the past, once when I hurt me shifting knee (carrying a 60lb pallet when the board gave way that I was holding to.). I have been easy when trying to get it to shift but firm, both down and up. Will this hurt the synchro's? Or anything else for that matter.
In case you wan to know, going from 4th-5th is the hardest but going from 3rd-2nd is just as hard.
Make me think I am driving a big rig at times.
At times, I can shift just as fast into 5th without the clutch.
Just wondering here.

If you do it perfectly it's OK. If you mess up even a little it's very hard on the synchros.
I never use the clutch in the work truck (10 speed Fuller). In my personal truck I always use the clutch.

An old habit, that I acquired in my 5-speed Macksidyne days, is to take off in first, power up to speed, let off throttle and simultaneously bring shifter into neutral, without depressing clutch, depress clutch and shift into second, power up to speed, let off throttle and simultaneously bring shifter into neutral without depressing clutch, depress clutch and shift into third, etc., etc.
To down-shift, "double clutch." i.e. Depress clutch and go to neutral, release clutch and "blip" throttle, depress clutch and shift into next lower gear, release clutch and throttle up to match speed.
I have found that, by always shifting in this manor, clutches - throw-out bearings - transmissions - etc., will last almost indefinitely.
Trying to shift these little synchronized transmissions without using the clutch is usually quite difficult, due to the synchronizers trying to "grab" the gear and spin it when you don't want it to.
Big truck transmissions are a whole different situation.
The only time the clutch is used is initial take-off.
