Getrag sight glass

Would this work if installed either in the fill plug hole or in one of the PTO bolt holes? Which location would be best to see the 5 qt overfill?

If you put it in the regular fill hole it would work for the normal fill level. But then when you go to all the trouble to get under the truck you could just pull the plug and look anyway. It is recommended that you overfill the Getrag by one quart though so I don't see how this gets you there. I have a 90 deg elbow in mine which allows an overfill but it is still a PITA to fill unless it's on a rack. But thin I don't trust Jiffylube with anything of mine. I use a hand pump. I don't see how this would fit in the PTO bolt hole.

I guess my question actually is "With a 5 qt fill, at what PTO bolt hole would the fluid level correspond to?"

For example, if the level was close to the middle bolt holes on each side of the cover then I could install a sight glass in the next lower hole. That way while I'm under the truck for an oil change I can see the approximate Getrag fluid level at a glance. If it's in the sight glass it's good, if it's not then inspect further

I cant say exactly where 5 quarts is but run my Getrag oil level at the Top PTO bolt.
This is well above the stock oil fill bolt so is good in my book.

I use a rear Diff oil bottle filled with engine oil and on the passenger side I can get it in there sideways and squirt enough in to overflow the bolt hole. A simple 17mm wrench and 3 seconds tells me if it's still topped off.

I goto the top pto bolt on the drivers side, no exhaust in the way then. I use one of those old fashioned thumb operated oilers to top it off

I put a pair of these: https://www.fastcoolers.com/ on my rig, which resulted in 3+ extra quarts of oil and a few access ports for various things like temp gauges and such...Mark Edit: Not cheap:https://www.fastcoolers.com/product-...-sight-glass-1 Maybe this gives you an idea of how you could mount a sight glass into the PTO cover plate...

While these add extra volume and cooling (which is good in general, of course) they don't add the extra height of the oil which from my understand is what is needed to help splash up on the front bearings.

Yup, that is why you add the oil to fill those things, then the extra quart on top of that...Mark

I always use the top PTO bolt too. If oil comes out I know I'm good.

Here is what I did. Fill point is under the transfer case shifter boot.

Thank you,
