I'm going to look at a 4x4 91 or so cummins truck to use for parts. The transmission pops out of second gear when decelerating. I'm looking for educated guesses on what might be wrong with it, and parts cost to repair.

Most likely a bad 2nd gear synchro. If you are the handy type you can fix it yourself and replace all the bearings in the trans for under $400. Expect to pay a shop around $1200 to R&R the trans and rebuild it.

 

My bet is on the 1-2 synchro assembly, more specifically, the detent ***** and springs arent doing their jobs of holding the synchro ring where it needs to be. I had a 91 that popped out of first on coasting, but by the time I let off in 1st, I was shifting, so I lived with it. Wish I'd traded it to the "new" truck.
