Two Second Getrag Fluid Check
Two Second Getrag Fluid Check
Third time's a charm. I pondered this for quite awhile before I finally came up with what I think is the best way so far to do this:

It's a sight level, got it from McMaster for like $15 or so, as I recall. I took advantage of the opportunity to re-do the filter pump intake line, since it needed to be on the driver's side for easy viewing anyway:

The other side's much cleaner now too, with the return line tucked in neatly away from the driveshaft:

The Amsoil filter uses synthetic media, so I'm gonna leave it alone for about 30,000 miles or three years, whichever comes first. I think that along with the 6 quarts of fresh Synchromax that's in there should hold up well for that interval. Evidently 7 quarts was bit too much as it seemed to be leaking out the vent. Starting to dry up now.

A couple days ago I was filling a Getrag through the top PTO bolt and was thinking about a sight glass and fill elbow on the PTO cover, no kidding. I was just wondering where to get the glass, now I don't have to wonder. Nice job, every 5 sp truck should have this. I have an extra PTO cover and I know exactly what to do w/ it now
Thanks for the writeup.

Yeah, last summer it was running up to 230F unloaded. That's what got the whole project started. But the Fast Coolers pretty much cured that. After it started cooling off las Fall I haven't even seen the temperature gauge move.
after reading what u did, i have a variation i am going to try. have the temp gauge and the pump. But run the oil thru a 2 row cooler and have it on a switch and kick it on when it gets too hot or when towing. Just a thought.I think you got a great idea here! Anything to keep these getrags running is a plus!!
I put the pump on a switch and only run it on long drives. Filtering is probably not the most critical aspect, but cooling certainly is. Mine was running 230 degrees unloaded in warm weather, I'm guessing due to tight bearings. Here's a link to the thread last year when this got started:

I decided to go with the Fast coolers and modify them to fit the Rag to get the extra fluid capacity. But other than that then yes, I'd definitely run the pump circuit through a cooler.

I think you need a pretty good pump to push it through a filter, that's why I got the diff pump from Summit. But it was painfully expensive, like around $200, as I recall. It wouldn't take much to circulate through just a cooler, but it needs to be compatible with oil and able to withstand some heat. I doubt a fuel pump would be up to the task.
I bet a simple Shurflo electric water pump would work, something like a 3 gallon per minute model. They hold up to chemicals, so engine oil shouldn't be a problem. They can be had for $50-$80.
I think iam going to install the gauge first to see what the temps do. Is this a good idea or should i just get my cooler installed? Iam not using a filter, just a tranny cooler. My idea was to put the gauge in the drain hole inthe bottom.
Yes, install the temperature gauge and run it for a few weeks to get some ideas of what temperatures you are running.
Then, install the coolers and monitor the difference.
There are many more Getrags that have worn out two trucks, pulling big loads, that have never had the fluid inspection plug taken out, let alone getting over-filled, cooled, etc.
We only get to read the bad news.
