getrag 5spd stuck in second gear! HELP!
my 91's 5spd is stuck in second gear. not sure on the whole story, my little brother borrowed the pickup, now it's stuck in second. i've got the boot off the shifter and i really can't tell anything from the top. i don't have the equipment to drop this large of a trans, so i'm in need of any advice i can get for fixing something like this from the top of the trans. i know that this transmission has been dying for a rebuild for a long time, as it needs synchros for second gear, but i figured it'd last me another couple thousand miles, at least till i got through this year. any ideas guys? thanks!
edit: may not be a getrag???...not sure what it would be...someone told me getrags are aluminum...mine has a steal/iron case....

I've never seen a Getrag with an aluminum case - they all were cast iron as far as I know.
The hack method to finding your problem is to cut a hole in the truck cab floor large enough to remove the transmission top cover which contains the shift forks. Once you have the top cover off, you may find a bent or broken fork but if it's been needing attention for a while, I'd suggest pulling it because the forks are about the only thing that you'll fix from the top. Any bearing or synchro work will require the tranny to be out of the truck. Bite the bullet and fix it right and you'll be glad in the long run. If it's still the original tranny at 500k miles, you're about due anyway.

no hacking for me. i'll be dropping the trans here this summer. i got something else to daily drive for the summer already, so i guess i can slowly fix the truck...but i tell you what, i miss that thing already!
can you pm me with a price on that stuff and maybe give me a source for new parts? is rebuilding this thing that difficult? i mean, i've built small block chevy's for years...and done my own rearend's as well...never tackled anything transmission related
Standard Transmission is one of the sources for Getrag parts. http://standardtransmission.com/ I've also gotten Getrag parts from Blumenthals. http://blumenthalautomatics.com/
If you don't have the Getrag portion of the FSM, PM me your e-mail address and I'll send it to you. Rebuilding the Getrag isn't that hard if you have a press and some basic tools and some snap-ring pliers. If you can correctly set up a rear end, this should be doable for you.

On my getrag rebuild that is almost done I got all my parts from Transparts warehouse. They haven't let me down on the 4 different orders I placed durning the rebuild.
Here were the cost of the parts for mine
Rebuild kit with syncros(blocker rings) 239.95
3 shift forks 52.40Ea.
Input shaft 101.09
shim kit 8.85
3rd gear 89.09
3rd-4th syncro slider assy 69.50
shifter spring 8.00
Honestally I bought the shift forks on the recommendation of most on here. I'm going to change them but my forks still looked ok. I asked about a Remanned top cover and I was told they use used forks if that means anything. There is the cost and mine turned out to be a little more broke than your standard rebuild. All the suprizes and waiting for parts is whats taking me so long. Good snap ring pilers, a 20 HF shop press, Some brass punches and a dial indicator. After doing it and learning this time. If I had all the parts I could have this done in one long day or a weekend. I did a ton to the truck while it has been down so it worked out.

I would pull the snap ring and try and pry the trans back in neutral I would say u have a roll pin working its way out of the shift fork on 2nd. U remove the gear stick thats the snapp ring I am talking about. If it will not come out of 2nd remove the shifter top and look under it at the forks if the roll key is not counter or flush with the bottom of the fork. drive it out and replace it.
i appreciate all the quick responses and will be subscribing to this thread for quick reference. this is not something i can tackle at the moment. i got alot of stuff going on. this truck is more or less my weekend toy hauler and money maker (moving stuff for people and hauling stuff to scrap). i'll get it taken care of when i get the time to drop this trans. i will ****** the shifter out first.
on another note, does anyone know where I can find a shifter hande? the base of mine is split...
