Unhappy Getrag Gebroken

On the way to work this morning I noticed it was growling at high RPM in 4th, and the bottom of 5th was noisy - both abnormal conditions for my trans. Idling at a light I noticed it was noiser than normal in neutral, and revving it up over 1,000 RPM didn't quiet it down. Then when accelerating (lightly) in 4th I heard a clunk and the truck lurched. Still had all 5 gears but noisier than ever. I limped it to the trans shop. I'm hoping a couple new bearings will set it right, but I have a feeling this will be expensive.

The sad part is I had it gone through a little less than 2 years ago "just in case" when I had the clutch put in. It's probably got less than 30k on it.

Stomp blew up a couple Dana 70's with his Getrag and he's made "just a wee bit" more power than me.

I think it wasn't set up right to begin with, we'll see how it goes this time.

Thanks. I am hoping it's just bearings since it never locked up or got hard to shift.

I think it had more to do with running double the power that the Germans engineered it for than any bad juju from the dog.

Sorry about the trans wanna. Were taking bets on how long mine will last, it has 20k or so now. Mine spun that front countershaft bearing race in the case and it's in there with caterpillar bearing and sleeve retainer now. I want to swap next year so I can run a dual disk (it slips if I go into 5th during burnouts. FWIW that jerk you felt concerns me, but a least damage control kicked in.

Yep, when it jerked I almost puked. It's not making any noises I would associate with damaged gears, though. I'm hoping that I just tore the center out of the clutch, it's been jerky on engagement for about 8 months since I screwed up a 4-3 downshift (dropped the clutch before the engine revs were up high enough).

I'm toying with the idea of having them slap in a Con-FE while they're in there regardless of how the clutch looks - but that would destroy my turbo fund.

Maybe you tore up the pilot bearing and took out the mainshaft front bearing. Keep up posted, we can all appreciate some carnage now and again. Hope all is rebuildable.

Well, the trans is fine. It was "just" the center of the clutch coming apart. The input hub has come loose from the clutch center. All the torsion springs are fine, and the clutch disc, pressure plate, and flywheel look like new. The clutch is a SBC Con-O (rated at 400 HP/900 ft. lbs.), so I don't know why it failed, but I'm not putting another one in. A little more timing and air and I'll be over the rating anyway. I don't think I need to step up to a double disc clutch yet, so a Con-FE is going in. Hopefully the truck will be ready to come home Friday afternoon.

Is that clutch the 13" one from SBC? I have suddenly found myself with a likely broken or breaking clutch hub on a pretty new but stock sized clutch. I haven't pulled it apart yet, but it is definitely clunking and squeaking around inside the bellhousing. Something is not right!

Is SBC a good place to get a clutch? I've done no performance mods to my truck, but I use it for light towing (up to about 8000#) alot. I don't want to have to replace the clutch every 40-50,000 miles...
