getrag 2wd 4wd differnace

getrag 2wd 4wd differnace

what is the differnce in them and can i convert a 2wd to a 4wd cheap dont mind tearing it down thanks

Mainshafts and tailhousings are different. Hard part or expensive part is finding getrag parts.

mainshaft and tailshaft housings are the main differences. MAin case, counter shaft, input shaft, shifter etc are all the same yah.

Actually, depeding on the distance involved from the t-case adaptor, you might get away with just putting your sleeve on the 2wd output shaft, though that would be a long shot- matching size and spline count from 2wd to 4wd. It is feasible, in theory.

The only difference from 2wd to 4wd has already been mentioned. There is a difference regarding the reverse idler and its installation from the "old style" to the "new style". Not sure on the cutoff date, but I have had both apart.

so I couldn't bolt a 2wd getrag in place of my 4wd getrag without changing anything?

Nope. You would need to change the output shaft and tailshaft housing.

darn, I found a 2wd getrag that I was hoping I could rebuild then swap into my truck, that way I wouldn't be without wheels for as long.

nope unless you wanted to go to a 1stgen crewcab swap or mega cab swap and have the 2wd trans in there hooked up to a divorced xfer case.
