Fuel gauge took off to Full

Yesterday when I left work I noticed the fuel gauge started to move from where it was-about 1/2 tank-to full. Now it just goes all the way to full and refuses to tell me how much fuel I have left! Could it be the sending unit or is there anything else (simpler) that it could be?

Dan, they say that about 80% or so of all electrical issues are the grounds, so thats always the best place to start.
moisture/corrosion in the connectors can cause teh connection to be weak/broken as can a crack in teh wire insulation.

I'd start at eh fuel tank end of the harness, since its the one exposed to teh elements/road garbage, adn check the wires and connections, maybe put a little dielectric grease in them and see if that helps.

if you can get to the wire at the tank that goes to the sending unit remove it from connection and turn on switch and see where gauge goes then ground that wire with key on and see if it does the opposite . if it does the sending unit or ground to the sending unit is the problem . if nothing happens as said before start checking for opens in wires and don't forget the ground.

This is getting irritating, the brake light fuse and turn signal fuse keep blowing too. They starting doing that about a day before the fuel gauge issue started. The brake/turn filament in the drivers side taillight burnt out so I replaced them both with Wagner long life's, ever since the fuses keep blowing.

Another thing, the day I replaced the taillight bulbs it rained hard here for a bit the same time we were out and about. This was also the day before the fuel gauge starting acting up. The belt also starting squealing a little since the rain. I wonder were water got to screw things up?? This is sure frustrating....

This all beside the fact that I can't figure out why the cooling fans aren't engaging on the Intrepid.

Sounds like the wiring harness that contains those wires is being cut by a sharp edge of metal and that is grounding the wires and blowing the fuses. My guess is that the fuel gauge wire is in the same bundle of wires which runs down the left side of the frame past the fuel tank on the way to the tail/stop lights. Crawl under and see if you can find where it's grounding out.

I have wireing diagrams for an 89 if you need to see.

Ya know this fuse blowing started after I replaced the one bulb. So then I replaced the other bulb too, it still continued. I just got down crawling around under it and under the dash and saw nothing suspicious. I turned the flashers on and the flashed about 3 or 4 times then stopped??? I'm thinkin maybe the bulbs are incompatible or something. They're "supposed" to be the right ones. I'll try different bulbs and see how that goes.

on a old 72 chev two ton truck it had a rear blinker 1157 twin filiment bulb. well i was distracted by my boss trying to yak at me while working and i grabbed a 1156 single filement bulb. it went right into the socket. after my boss got done talking i tested my work and all the clearance lites were flashing with only the four ways on. had me going finally pulled the bulb and saw that the socket was so worn that either bulb went right it. you are on the right track to retrace your work.

Anyone know what this fuse is for? It has 5A stamped on the bottom. It's about 6 inches upstream of the fuse block harness under the dash. I didn't notice it until I felt something HOT against the back of my hand while looking around under there. It was really hot but I managed to unplug it. I pull the cap off and the two "tips" aren't quite physically touching. There's a minute air gap between them. Does this one have anything to do with the brake/turn lights?

I just put in another new set of standard 1157s, replacing the long life 2057s I put in the other day. Same thing though, after installing them, replacing the fuses, and testing the brake and turn signals it blew another brake light fuse.

almost looks like a four way flasher or the turn signal flasher. i am sure someone will verify.

Well it doesn't seem to effect the turn signals, it's out and they still work....knock on wood. Haven't put the brake fuse back in yet.

And it's not either of the flashers, they're mounted right on the fuse block. This is plugged into a connector right in the harness.

Yeah you'd have to probably probably have to pull the fuse block down from it's spot to see it.

That's the timer for the halo around the ignition.
