Fuel Filter Replacement

Okay, so I was stupid. > I had a dealer change the fuel filter. > > Now I really have some questions. I see Geno's has fuel filters for '93's for $8.95. The dealer charged me $31.30. When I look at Geno's price list am I looking at the wrong filter? Is there more than one fuel filter for the '93? Now I'm leading up to the second question. What does it take to change that fuel filter? I can see a canister that wouldn't be the easiest thing to get to. Is the filter inside the canister? Anyway, what does it take to change that little sucker? The dealer charged $54.60 labor. Holy Moly, $85.90 just to change a filter. The old man had better learn how to do a few things.

Re:Fuel Filter Replacement

Geno's price sounds a little low and the dealer price is pretty typical of dealers. Changing the fuel filter is not all that difficult. First of all I disconnect the water sensor and remove the clear plastic drop tube. I use a filter band wrench to remove the filter - it's a spin on filter. The spring loaded drain will unscrew fron the bottom of the filter. Your new filter should come with an "O" ring to replace the one on the drain - oil the "O" ring prior to re-installing the drain on the new filter. I use a little oil to lubricate the "O" ring and the seal at the top of the filter. You can fill the filter before you put it on or use the lift pump to prime it - it needs to be primed before you start your truck. After you screw the mew filter on re-connect the water sensor and put the plastic tube back in place. After you've done it once you'll find it's very easy - but a little messy.

I also drain my filter to check for water on a weekly basis - just an ounce or so should be enough. Hope this helps

Re:Fuel Filter Replacement

I use Fleetguard fuel filter part # FS1232 and pau just under $12.00 (Canadian). These filters come with two O rings. The bigger one is used as described by Bob. The smaller square cut O ring goes on threaded pipe where the filter screws on the housing. It is a bit of a pain to remove the old sqaure cut O ring - I use a small screw driver. If the primer lever does not appear to be working just bump the starter and then use the lever. The primer lever must be left in the up position.

Re:Fuel Filter Replacement

Bob and Al,

My thanks to both of you. The price you mention, Al would be about $9.00USD. At least today. I looked at Geno's again and their filter is the FS1232. Of course by the time they throw in shipping and taxes I'd probably be back up to the $20 range. Guess it's time to visit a Cummins dealer.

Hey, the Marlins won!!!

Re:Fuel Filter Replacement

Take a look at Donaldson Filters, the fuel filter cost me about $12 and uses the same paper as a CAT filter which clames to be the best filter out there. Donaldson's are Cummins approved and I use them on every truck or pick-up engine I've ever had and never tossed a pump because of debris. My dad has used them for years and swears that his engines and fuel systems last longer because of them. Just my 2 cents

Re:Fuel Filter Replacement

From what I have read about the Duramax fuel systems being upgraded to CAT pre-filters, I would think the Donaldsons have the same filter media specifications and the filtration would be very good.

Never heard of them before... I always used fleetguard for all my filters since I have had a Cummins.

BTW, don't forget to unplug the WIF connector before unscrewing the sensor or the filter. You could wrap up and break the wires..
