I can repeat what is usually said:

Never, ever, never, ever, ever, ever, ever, never, ever, never, never, ever tweak fuel without a pyrometer. A quarter of a turn too much and a few seconds extra of throttle and you can melt pistons, which can take out valves and will take out the turbo. The gauge is cheap insurance. Especially with stock exhaust, you don't want to tweak fuel, and if you tow, you're playing cheat the Devil.

That said, I think that if you run it softly, are conservative with the starwheel and AFC and advance the timing to compensate, you might be able to be safe. I got no experience with any of that, though.

I tweeked mine pretty far. I did every tweak I could find before I had a pyro. The pyro just tells me that I never get over 1200 and thats to the floor. I have two other friends that did they same thing. One still doesn't have a pyro and he's been running tweaked towing trailers for years.

That said, you should probably just do that $120 pyro. Its CHEAP insurance. Thats only two tanks of fuel! Just get one and install it. Its really easy.

That is crazy, Chass! I was able to peg 1450* in seconds with only a couple turns on the fuel screw and basic AFC tweaks. It would have gone higher too but I let off as soon as I saw it go over 1400* (it was still climbing pretty fast). This was unloaded too, imagine towing and flooring it to get past someone or over a hill like that.

Of course, once you get one and start pegging it at 1600* anyway, I don't think your much better off. I've never been over that 1450*, but it sounds like plenty of other 1st gen guys have!

Well maybe I need to turn my fuel screw in further. Heck the truck idles at around 500 RPMs. I bet I could turn that screw in another two turns . . .

Now I got something to work on tonight

Wow, I can't get mine to idle any less than 900-950 and still have full travel on the throttle linkage.

I remember it didn't take much on the screw to go from 1200* max to 1400* max. I think it was only about 3/4-1 turn on mine (that was after a turn or two in from stock already).

That may be another problem I'm having is that my throttle linkage isn't pulling the throttle wide open.

I raced a 92 Dually yesterday with a getrag and he beat me up pretty good. We both basically have the same mods too. I've got some more tweeking to do. Although its got lots of power now and it doesn't get hot so maybe I like it where it is . . . NAAAAWWW. I've got the exhaust housing on the way then 4" and timing
