Front Brake Mystery
This weekend, while driving over the mountains, I heard the tell-tale griiinding sound coming from my front end that says it's time for new brake pads. Uhhg, I thought.
When I got home I popped off the left front, which is where I thought the sound was coming from, and looked at the pads. Whew, just in time. The outer pad had about 1/16" left. But where was the grinding sound coming from?
Then I popped off the right front. Hmmm, both pads had about 1/8" left. So... Holy mother of all things good!! Both retaining clips that hold the caliper into the bracket where gone! Vanished! So the caliper was riding outward when I stepped on the brakes and hitting the inside of the rim. No damage done, but how the heck did both bolts come out and fly away?
So the second part of this question is this. I got 2 new caliper hardware kits from Napa, and they include 2 funny oblong/oval rubber o-ring-like thingys in each box. Anyone know what those are for? I moved them all over the place trying to figure where they might fit, but couldn't figure anything out. Never seen anything like them before. Here's a pic:

The only thing I can think of is that the bolts were left loose.
My FSM shows o-rings going under the retainer clips, but they don't look near that big in the drawing.
This is lovely, I'm finding out about all kinds of parts my brakes are missing today.
