Found a clean 89! Have a few questions?

I just found a clean 89 4x4 5 speed, but had a few questions. Did the 89's use the Getrag & NP205, Dana 60 front, Dana 70 Rear just like the 91-93? Also, this truck has really different looking lockouts on the front. they appear factory, but just older looking. Did they use different lockouts on the 89 & 90 models? Also, I know this truck isn't intercooled, but how about performance mod's? Do they make a POD injector that will fit this engine with the larger injector bore's? Also, what turbo housing would it have? Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks

Mike

It should have-89-90 160 HP 22-25 psi boost H1C 18cm2 turbo-I know they make an adaptor bushing washer combo for the PODS to install in the early 1st gen trucks! The rest you'll have to get elsewhere!

Driveline is the same as the later trucks. Don't know about the lockouts.

The Selectro hubs are factory. I think Selectro was bought out by superwinch at some point. Parts are hard to get, from what I hear. Warn has a part # for a 'premium' replacement. Never seen them and not sure on price. Mine work fine, but I've only had the truck for a month or so. I'm in the process of building my tranny right now and I can tell you first hand that the front axle is a d60, the rear is a d70 and the t-case is an np205 gear driven. Lots of HEAVY cast iron under there! The 5-speed is the loved (loathed?) Getrag. My truck has either the Bosch 185's or pods...the previous owner didn't know (yikes!) Anything other than the stock injectors for the non i/c trucks need sleeves to fit, which are readily available. I love my truck!

I bought an 89 D-350 in November. It is a fixer upper but has 160,00 on the engine and runs great. Cosmetically it sucks but there are no dents. So far I've replaced the thermostat because some knothead punched it out, the Oil pressure sender (common problem) and I have a $69 speedo gear on order because it was missing. ???? I also think the headlight switch is going (intermittant) and the tail/clearance lights have already been bypassed.

The Getrag tranny has some noise but I'm unsure if it's normal or not. Some say they have a weak input bearing and usually recommend overfilling it by 1 quart of 5W30 synthetic engine oil. I think the tranny is also said to be weak if the engine is BOMED with POD, a tweaked VE-Pump etc...

I discovered it had been in a flood or deep water since the door lock motors were rusted solid. I got one of them working but I need a one for the right side. The left power window has a gear problem waiting on warm weather to look at.

The 16cm2 Turbo housing is recommended for more low end boost which helps with the badly spaced gear ratios.

I plan to run the Getrag until it quits then probably do a conversion to an NV4500. I need a set of gauges and a tach would be nice.

OH Yeah! Smoking people is fun!

Keep on Truckin!

Edwin

That should say 160,000 miles.

The manual ghurus' say with a good clutch and an extra court of oil, your 5 speed will take a bit of abuse. Check the cooling system over for signs of over heating, and check the head around the injectors for cracks because of this. The early heads had larger injector bores (stronger injectors), which may cause cracking if the truck over heats. The early trucks have a smaller radiator. If you tow or have heating issues, you can cobble in a later radiator, if you don't mind doing that sort of thing. The early truck also has the stronger fuel pin in the pump. My lockouts say Superwinch. They have plastic dials, but I've worked them plowing and they haven't broke yet.
