Smile Flutter cured!

Well, my truck no longer has a case of turbo flutter. This morning I swapped my H1C for a WH1C off a '95 CTD. A WH1C is the same turbo as a 1st gen, Holset just cut a map width enhancer slot in the compressor housing like an HX35 has. I can't make this turbo flutter no matter what I do. I can even floor it at 40 in 5th, it just spools up and goes to work. And I love the way it sounds when it gets spooled up! The silencer ring didn't even make it to my truck, I pulled that out as soon as I unpacked the turbo. The truck isn't any faster when I keep it wound up, but it is definitely more responsive in the RPM range where it used to flutter. I would highly recommend this upgrade to anybody having a flutter problem, the WH1C or the HX35 will cure the flutter. I got mine off Ebay for $250 shipped. Sorry I can't give any boost or EGT numbers, I'm still running gaugeless. I did drill and tap the manifold while the turbo was off, so gauges will be coming soon.

You know I never did get any type of flutter when I ran my wh1c turbo with either a 18,16,12 housing on it. I have had 3 different sets of injectors on it. Still no flutter. I know that when I did run it with my 370's extruned honed stage 3 it sure did build heat sometimes I saw 1800 on the pryo. Now that I went to the Piers hx40 I still dont get any flutter, but the temp is way more manageble. Just my 2cents worth I am glad you fixed your problem I heard that flutter can cause some serious problems.

That is awesome Dave!! I was just on a trip yesterday, and the stock turbo in my truck will only support 6~7 psi at 1400rpm before it starts to surge. And thanks again to contributing to my turbo swap with that silencer ring ! Luckily it takes all types -- the more and less noise averse !

cool deal, I had a stock H1C with a 14 CM housing on it and it barked, fluttered and made every kind of noise imaginable. I went to an H1C with an HX40 compressor wheel and a 16 CM housing and no more bark, or flutter, just a nice whistle. I can get 41 PSI boost and my EGTs are down from the other turbo arrangement.

Bushy depeneds on how heavy my foot is. Since I live right at sea level my temps with the HX40 are around 1500-1600 are a very hard pull. With the old H1c it would hit 1800 pretty easy, I think I heard somewhere that you have hit somewhere close to those numbers.
