Fluke, or impending doom on a 'rag tranny?

1990 D250 5.9 Cummins Getrag 5 speed

I had to make the girl do some work hauling a trailer with two scoops or dirt and one scoop in the bed.

I did have to stop at Wally World on the way to get the dirt.

When I parked and put the tranny in neutral, engine idling, let off the clutch, it sounded like a spinning bicycle wheel with cards in the spokes. I engaged the clutch and then released again, no more noise. It also happened once at the dirt place.

It did not happened when I got back home.

What does that sound like to you guys?

Thanks!

If the clutch isn't slipping and trans is shifting OK, then possible throwout bearing. Check fluid in trans for metal particles and condition, trans fluid level OK. I have also seen crankshaft thrust bearing cause similar noises. Check crankshaft end play, crankshaft moves forward allowing flywheel to contact housing. I have seen this cause tapping noise with auto trans, crankshaft moves forward when braking allowing torque bolts to hit housing.

If doom is near, I rec Blumenthal in OKC. Just ordered rebuild Getrag from them. Haven't driven it yet, Tranny to arrive on Tues or Wed. 3 years / unlimited mileage. Talk to Dave, the owner.
Mine was making strange hard to describe grinding (or shuffling noise) in 3 and 5th. When pulled the cover off, you could see that the counter shaft gear and the (forgot which gear it is on the upper shaft) were misaligned. The wear pattern was way wrong - instead on being near the middle of the teeth - it was on the leading edge.
Cheers

If you have more time than money, then investigate right away. It's a lot cheaper to replace a thrust bearing than an engine, an pilot shaft bearing than a transmission, etc.

Sorry to hear about the job.

I am used to working on everything except trannys. Well, I do know how to replace fluid and filters on the slush box type.

Do I need to separate the engine and tranny to get to that stuff? If I have the step by step, I can get get it done. It's just like anything else...I need instructions.

Thanks!!!

Thanks!

I looked in the sticky, all I found were part numbers. No diagrams. I did see where someone had trouble creating PDF files out of word files.

There is a free converter. You have to download the program and the driver from www.pdf995.com

So, I still need instructions and advise on how much of a PITA it will be to do this.

Thanks!
