What have you guys used to remove/replace the fan in one of these trucks? Where would you buy the tool(s)? Looks like one would need a very "Skinny wrench"

Fan hub wrench from Napa or the like along with a hammer.

 

Anti-seize for the threads.

 

There are several types out there , I would recomend getting the correct tool to avoid issues , usually they have backwards threads [ I can not say I have worked on every yr / model ] , best is to look at the blades of the fan & figure which way it turns , when running , then to take off , turn in the opposite direction on normal running .
It takes 2 large flat wrenches , one goes around the nut , the other is big enough to go around the nuts that bolt the pulley on [ as if it were a nut ] .
Do not let them sell you the universal tool that pivots like a scissors , just slips off too easy , many have used a hammer & chisel , well that may work in a pinch , but creates all kinds of future problems .

 

I went to the cheap-o tool store and bought an SAE whench that was close (the fan is Metic) then just ground it to fit. Cost me 3.00. I cannot remember the size I bought, but can check after work. I guess I am just cheap.

 

I welded up my own from flat steel stock.

I just used the big nut on the fan-clutch as a pattern and made the wrench fit.

I also made a "holder" wrench that catches the bolt-heads and holds the pulley still.

I actually have better success by sharply striking the END of the wrench,while holding pressure in the direction of removal.

All I have ever messed with are threaded contrary to standard direction.



Use plenty of anti-sieze.
