Factory fan clutch vs NAPA or other aftermarket
Factory fan clutch vs NAPA or other aftermarket
I wanted to replace my fan clutch when replacing my broken fan but a factory one is $288CDN and over a week away. How many of you are running aftermarket clutches and how well are tehy working for you?
Before I bought my truck from my Father in law, he had trouble with his fan clutch. He put two napa ones on and they didn't do well. He finally put on a factory one, the newest one with five blades and it worked much better. It may be more money but you don't have to do it three times.
Has anyone tried the stuff from flex-a-lite? They have both a regular and heavy duty clutch, as well as several fan blades that I think would fit our application. I am considering one or both when my OEM stuff breaks. What about electric fans?
I would be surprised if factory parts are still available? 2-3 years ago I needed one for my 1990 and there weren't any. I called one of the last dealers to show inventory and they say they sold it a few weeks earlier! I ended up with one from O'Reilly's.

Anyone know of a way to test it? Say if it was off the vehicle and I blew hot air across it with a hair dryer would I be able to feel it lock up? Does these units actually lock up 100%?

I don't know the correct part numbers, but if you want to go first class (and expensive) it's my understanding these folks got the mess to do it ~ http://www.hortoninc.com/catalog/index.asp

I put the latest DC one in (clutch and fan combo, yeah it's expensive) and have had no problems, even towing in the high heat of upper Alberta. :-)
