Re:exhust for 1st gens

I think that Riprook has one as well as Bigexhaust.com. For me, I don't see myself getting to the power level that I need a 4" down pipe, I just replaced from the transmission back and found it helped out alot..

From who I've talked to the 4" downpipe would be for guys in the 350Hp+ club for any real benefit..

Re:exhust for 1st gens

Thanks for your replies. I'm not sure how to go. I want to put stacks on but I have dimond plate running boards and to bring the exhaust under them would put them to close to the ground, and I can't run them thru the bed because I have a 105 gal L shaped fuel tank. Then I want to get rid the stock exhaust so that I'll have room for my sencond air tank. The only other way to do it would run the pipe thru the side of the bed just above the running boards. Eather way will be a experance. Thanks for the Links, I'll call them Monday..

Re:exhust for 1st gens

Be sure and dont get fooled into thinking you are getting a full 4" system. Most are not true 4" setups (downpipe that is). The only person I know that is building 4" downpipes for the first gens is NascarMark at PDR. And, from what I have heard, the 4" is a real tight fit for the first gens.

I talked to Rip about possibly getting a 4" downpipe and he said it was a real bad fit from the ones he has seen. Not Marks in general, but some others that people have fabbed

Re:exhust for 1st gens

i know just about every week someone must ask this question or one like it; is there a benefit to removing the stock muffler and just running a straight pipe as opposed to installing a new 3.5 or 4" muffler system from like Bigehaust.com or Gibson or ?
I would like to do this in the next few days and was wondering if anyone could put their experience in words for me and others to learn from. Thanks so much guys. You guys really got it going on in here! 8)

Re:exhust for 1st gens

I've got a true 4" exhaust from the turbo back on my "93 - custom built by Rip Rook. The down pipe does not have the 2 90 degree bends but rather a 45 degree bend at the bottom. It connects to my BD exhaust brake which forms the top 45. I believe Rip also has a source for a 4" down pipe. We tried Nascar Marks 4" down pipe but could not get the clearance on the pipe.

I wanted a bigger exhaust but not the noise as I had the straight pipe 3.5" on my 89 and it was fun, but under load too much noise. So this time I went for a retrofit on the 4" with a muffler a like it much better. I still get a drone but the raspy bark is muffled a bit. Truely a performance improvement getting away from the stock pipe, especially the one over the axle, good for at least a pound of boost for sure..

I have a couple pics in the link in my sig..

[/quote]You will get lower EGT's from a bigger system and the tone is deeper. My 4" BigExhaust.com system is quieter (outside the truck) than the stock system with the muffler removed because I've added a turn-down tip at the end. It's amazing how much noise you lose when you aim it at the ground. Inside it's about the same except for the deeper tone, and a little less noise reflection off walls and jersey barriers. I must be lucky because neither of my setups ever droned.

Re:exhust for 1st gens

With the current setup I get a good drone at about 2100- 2200 RPM cruising and more so loaded. Its almost like a cab resonance though, cuz if I recline the seat a bit, its not even noticable, but if I lean into the windsheild you can really hear it.

I did have a turndown tip on my 89 and it did "seem" quieter on the street. 8) I may have to do the same this time..

One thing I learned quite awhile back was that if you double the dia. of a pipe or tube it quadruples the volume or capacity.
There for going from a 3"-4" dia. the tube is able to carry double the volume. ;D ;D In terms of exaust restrictions thats got to make a signifigant differance.FWIW
