Exhaust porting?

Alright i think i wanna port my manifold and my exhaust ports too. I know the guy with the cummins chevy on here just ported his a little while ago, but I don't remember seein how it turned out and how much it helped? I just got the hy35 on last week and it has the undivided exhaust housing so i was thinkin about really openin up my manifold where it bolts on to the turbo. My dad is a mechanic and he wanted me to port my manifold when i put the hy35 on, but i decided to wait so i can tell the difference. He said i could port it with the head on if i put some paper towels back in the exhaust ports so that any filings don't get back in there and then i could vaccum the rest out. How do you think this would work? and then match the ports up with the manifold? I will probably change all the exhaust gaskets while i'm at it. 235,000 miles on those things... and i plan on paintin the manifold with the VHT header paint that i just painted my exhaust housing with, its holdin up well. what do you guys think? how much will it help?

92smoking blacky as you know i don't discourage guys not to do something, just as I didn't when you went with the hy35. Porting the head while on the truck i'd discourage, one tiny tiny bit of casting was to get onto the top or edge of your piston you probably scored a cylinder wall. Or a tiny bit get jammed under a valve & seat it might encourage a burnt valve. But your dad is a mechanic so discuss this with him. I've done crazy stuff before and got away with it but then again i've got caught and had to replace some high dollar items. Whichever way ya go good luck with it.

If you are going to port the exhaust side of the cyl. head, I would back off the rocker arms. That way there is less of a chance getting fillings in the cylinder. The paper towels and shop vac. after would be good too.

Just my $0.02

I dont see any reason to port the exhaust runner on the truck. Thats not the restriction. The bowl/ short turn is. Pull the head and port it. Then get a good valve job.

It would be stupid to open the runner up and not be able to flow any air because its bottle necked up by the valve.

doing the manifold is well worth it. i dont really "port " the head itself, just clean / smooth casting. as stated above with the head on the engine dont bothr. do the manifold. i,ve done several and always pleased with results.

alright maybe i will just do the manifold, but i'm not sure yet. I think I will take the manifold off and look at the ports and think about it a little more. I will talk to my dad more about it too and see what he thinks.

Like CaptainChrysler said, if the valves are completely closed, paper towels, a shop vac, a magnet, and/or a few blasts from a blow gun should clear out all the debris but then again, I haven't tried it myself. Good luck and keep us posted.

Yea as CaptainChrysler said back off the rockers and use copious amounts of compressed air to blow the filings out and use the magnet and the vacuum. But think twice about pulling the head and getting a good job done before doing a partial job with minimal results. Good luck on your porting.

Ive ported a couple of these and if you dont take it off the truck you will end up with a BS port job. You cant work the bowls which is huge, as well as trying to get consistency will be impossible... And let me tell you about the smallest of filing that wont come out with a shop rag and compressed air but will manage to work their way up the guide and chew it and the valve seals apart.....

Its bad enought to get the flow correct on a bench, I cant imagine doing it in the truck.
