Exhaust manifold/turbo porting

So i was thinking about one day pulling off my exhaust manifold and going to work on porting it. Anyone had experince with this? I'm not scared to do it, no water jackets to hit or anything, but i just want to hear an experienced opinion. My plan is to pull the manifold and port it to the gasket and then do the same to the turbine housing, maybe even loosing the divider in the middle. Im running an HX-40 and im thinking that any extra airflow i can get is better than nothing.

the stock manifold cracks easy enough as it is I don't know if I would waste the time

Matching the gaskets up can't hurt anything, but not alot of stock to work with. I have an ATS. Lot's of stock.

on the old ford 2.3 turbo motors, we would port the snot out of the exhaust manifolds to help performance and to help PREVENT cracks... they would always crack at the same point where the casting went from really thick to really thin... the metal would expand/contract at different rates and crack... porting to make the thickness more uniform seemed to help.

lower EGT's probably wouldn't hurt either

I'm thinking about the same thing with my spare 12cm housing. What tools are needed to port? I've got a die grinder, I just don't know if there's anything else that I should get to make the job easier/better.

well, I don't really see how porting a turbine housing helps... a lot of people swear by it, but you can't really get inside the scroll portion... I would just gasket match the inlet so that you have no step there, open up the wastegate hole a little bit so that the wastegate puck still seals, but so that it'll flow more exhaust through it.

if you can POLISH the inside of the turbine housing, that'll be beneficial as it'll keep the heat in the exhaust...

I've always wanted to try an extrude honed turbine housing (but not enough to spend the money! LOL)

I personally wouldn't waste my time porting a stock manifold. If you're going to port it invest in an ATS or similar three piece manifold.

Well....im back in college and not much to invest. It was just one of those" humm, wonder if that'll work" ideas. And apparently i have just found something that might be more beneficial to work on, a blown ic boot. Crazy thing is, i noticed a little more lag and a little less top end, but i can still hit the same amount of boost! The thing is blown half way out, not just a small hole!!! It's just mind boggling that she still runs good enough to slip the clutch, just not going to be good once i fix the boot.

I ported mine. Didnt have money for a 3pc one. Its actually pretty easy to do. As far as results I have no clue because I had changed too many things at one time.
