Exhaust housing

I've got the #16 housing on but when I hit the long grades pulling my 5, er it hit's 900* rather fast. the pump has been turned up 10% and I'm running the power-wagon injectors. The timming also has been increasted. I have a 3" down pipe to a 4' exhaust with a new aro muffler that's supposed to help with fuel milage and exhaust temp. The muffler seems to help on exhaust temp but I want to know if putting the 18.5 houseing back on would help lower the exhaust temp more.. Thanks... Ralph...

where is your pyro probe? 900 is nothing as long as it is pre turbo. the 18.5 with most likly make it run hotter as it lags to spin the air the air out of there. i would ditch the air box as well.

Unless you are running at high RPM's, say 2400+ putting the bigger housing on will make things worse, not better.

If you are running down around 1700 RPM, then going even smaller might help.

My understanding is you would need to be pushing well over 300hp before the 16 would get restrictive . . .

Depending on the grade that you are pulling, the weight of your 5'er and the rear end axle ratio those readings may be the best that you can expect, but you would definitely want to see them less than that. If you are using 5th gear and the temperature is moving up then shift down to 4th gear - that may help.

I had the same problem with mine. Went to a 12cm housing and have no problems with EGTs now. My water temp climbs faster than the EGts.

My EGTs were worse with the 16cm. The 12cm made EGTs much better. Less smoke on spool up too.

I have watched this for some time. The 12 valvers run 21, 18, and usually the smallest the 16. The 24 valves come stock with 12. Why would not the 12 valve run just fine with a 12w.

I can tow more with the 12cm than with the 16cm because my EGTs are under control and I can put my foot all of the way to the floor.

During the summer I pull a 4000# Jeep behind with a 2000# camper on the truck. Never have had an issue with EGTs on the 12cm.
