Emergency Towing Questions

Okay, before someone starts going dramatic on me, NO, I am not broke down, nor do I need to be towed.

Just so I will be prepared, should such a crisis arise, I figure it would be better to ask now, instead of screwing something up some dark rainy night with no one around that knows to ask.

Question: Can the 2wd Getrag be towed for several miles in neutral, without removing the driveshaft??

Can the 2wd 91.5 automatic be towed several miles in neutral, without removing the driveshaft??

I know some vehicles can be towed indefinitely, simply putting them in neutral--been there and done that many times in many vehicles--it's a REDNECK thing.

I also know that some transmissions sustain damage from towing, and in these, the shaft has to be removed.

I just want to know what can, and can't be done, should I ever get in a situation where I would need to know.

Thanks.

The 727 has a rear pump, so it can be towed. But even so id be hesitant to tow it far. I'm not sure on getrag.

The 727 IS NOT a rear pump transmission and for short distances 1-2 mi at moderate speeds should be fine w/shaft attached. Any towing of greater distance always safer to remove it.
As far as the Getrag is concerned, it doesnt have a pump all lube is done by the countershaft slinging oil. But the same rules for the 727 should be applied here as well, any towing of distance it always safer to pull the shaft.

My truck was towed for 30 plus miles 4 years ago with the Getrag in neutral with no problems then or now.

From the owner's manual- no more than 15 miles, no faster than 30 mph. Beyond that, pull the driveshaft.

Is the 727 an over-drive transmission??

The wife's truck has an over-drive button on the dash.

What transmission does she have??

Thanks.

In theory, you can put the t-case in neutral and tow it, as the tranny shafts wont turn with the t-case in neutral. Noitce I said IN THEORY. I'd still slip under the truck and take out the u-joint straps and remove the driveshaft. DOesnt take that long.

And don't forget to put tape on the tailpipe. In the right situation, at higher tow speeds, air can flow throughthe engine and spin the turbo. As the engine is not turning no oil flows and the turbo can fry. This is rare, but can happen.

The 727 can be pulled off like a standard to start it, this can not be achieved without a shaft driven pump. It does have a front pump as well. And yes iv pulled mine off, it fires right up ay around 33.
