egt question
Hey guys, I changed my gov spring (put a 366 in), and while I was in there I turned the pin, went 1 turn down on the starwheel, and went to the collar on the fuel screw ( it was almost there already, about a half turn). I have a 93 d250 ctd w/auto and 3.54's, stock turbo with a 3 1/2 banks exhaust and a k&n filter. I have no gauges yet and was wondering what my egt's might look like. Engine temp was very slightly elevated from the usual spot and noticed I now hear a suction from my opened up airbox like the turbo is still turning after shut down. Is this to be expected? Gauges are coming soon, but may have to wait a while. Thanks in advance!
All trucks react different to the pump tuning, and I personally feel no fueling mods should be done without gauges. The being said, generally on intercooled trucks, with the fuel screw turned to the factory collar, EGT's shouldn't be that bad. I wouldn't do any long hard pulls though.
To each their own really. If it's just a light truck being rode around normal and once in awhile getting after it, there isn't much you can do to harm it for 20-30 second bursts it seems. I gave a turn to my utility truck's fuel screw when I put in the new inj. pump and I love how responsive it is now with nothing else done. However, it will only have 500lb worth of tools in it really, and I drive the speed limit and don't horse around really. If I was hauling a bunch in the bed all the time and trying to do 60mph up the bigger hills around here, I would DEFINATELY be putting my gauges in first.
Having the pump tuned with no gauges pulling trailers or heavy loads on hills can be bad with pump mods. Depends on what you're doin.

Thanks guys. I feel the same way about mods, but I figured very minor fueling wouldn't hurt it. I have a company truck, so it doesn't get driven much. I only put ~3000 miles on it last year. Anyway, what would you guys do, besides gauges, with a truck like this to pull a 9.5k camper? thanks

Yeah i would just take it easy for now with your truck, don't hold it open long, and don't tow a big load. I know it does suck, the pump mods are free and easy, its the gauges that are expensive! Oh and hat turbo sound when you turn your truck off is just the sound of the turbo winding down. Yes that is normal, it is music to my ears!
ha ha I am guessin though from the little pump mods you have done, I doubt your egts are over 1200... So i think your pretty safe, but get those gauges as soon as you can and you will feel alot better!

like said earlier. to each his own. i took my chances and turned my pump up and didnt have gauges for the longest time. still pulled a trailer and all that. it was probably dumb because if pulled a truck through mountains in west virginia and all that. but i put gauges in and found i was safe doing all of that. each truck will react different. but in my case i was throwin plenty of soot and was still safe. and i will ad that my egts dont become a problem until my turbo is spooled with the throttle to the floor. basically what im saying is that it is up to you but you are taking a chance.

Appreciate the input guys! I'm pretty happy so far with the truck. I timed it's 0-60 this afternoon on I-49 and got a pretty cool 12.60s. That's down from 15.4s. That's about 3/4 throttle to save egt's. Anyway, being relatively new to ctd's, what exactly is the change in pitch I hear from the turbo when I push the skinny pedal too far? I heard it before the mods, but really seems sensitive after. This is aside from the normal whistle w/o silencer ring. When I back off, it goes away. Just curious. Thanks.

No. I realize the faster it spools, the higher the whistle, but this is a little different. Seems to me to be the turbo trying to give more than it can. It is the same sound I used to hear when my A/F needed attention. I took my airbox out and opened it up some so it can breathe, which helped some. I'm just wondering if anyone else has heard it too. It's a sudden change in pitch, and when i back out of it, it goes away. I don't think there's a problem, just trying to figure it out. I guess here is where gauges come in, huh?
