Dipstick pic- does it look okay?

Probably should slice up the first two oil filters to see what your catching in the pleats. That is, if your interested in doing something like that. I would, especially on a neglected rig. After you get it all cleaned out, send in a sample for an oil analysis to Blackstone labs. Heck, sample the ATF also if you have an automatic.

We didn't, but you could...they're cheap for these trucks.
What would a Cummins be without leaks...
Good luck. Should make things look a LOT better.

Yes that's the one. Put those new injectors in it and fired it up last night and ran it for a minute then checked the oil and sure enough it went full milky.

Back in the good old days we used kerosene instead of diesel. Today, Beryman's Chemtool works just as well.

I agree with the others...if it had been neglected for a long time there is most likely a lot of sludge in the motor. It's going to blacken up super fast!
I'd change the oil like you suggested, after a 500 mile trip. Then I'd do it every 3 months for the next year or so, or until the oil starts looking more "normal".
My 89 motor I had in my crewcab used to turn the oil black within a 1000miles or so, but my 93 motor I now have in the crew will just start to turn slightly brown-sih, from clear oil, at 5000km's.

I have noticed that motors that have the injection pump "turned up" and make over fueled black smoke, even if just a strong puff before the turbo lights, makes the oil dark much quicker.
I have had motors that used to keep the oil looking fairly clean for a while, get darker oil quicker after turning them up.

. How do you know when blow by is excessive? Other than oil leaks popping out of every seal, what is the check for diagnosing excessive? Been thinking about upgrading to those vented valve covers, but only if needed, and not for the cool look factor. Reason I question excessive blow by to begin with is, like most of you, the rig is not stock anymore as far as performance goes
