different housing or different turbo

I have a chance to buy a 12cm housing for $75 or a complete HX35W for $160. Both are from a 1996 model year truck.

Is the HX35 worth the money as an upgrade for a closer to stock truck? How much fab involved to swap it?

$75 is a little expensive for a 12cm housing, but $160 sounds good for a good used HX35. The only change with either would be moving the downpipe back an inch or so. The HX35 has a slightly larger compressor wheel and will whistle more if you take the silencer ring out.

Like gman said, $160 is a good price for a good used HX35. I found that moving the down pipe back an inch was not possible, I cut an inch out of the pipe by the flange and welded it back together.

The compressor wheel should be 56mm and it will have the map width enhancing slot in the compressor housing.

If the turbo is in good shape, I say go for it. The HX35 is a perfect turbo for the mildly BOMBed truck

Been looking for a couple of months and thats the best price so far. Most guys are wanting $120-140 shipped for them in the classifieds on here. Seems crazy to me when new one is $150 Guess they need more cash to buy a tank of fuel.

Actually a wastegated 12cm housing is $400. From what I've read, I wouldn't run a 12 without the wastegate.

I put a wanted ad in here and got a number of replys. I bought one for $75 shipped and had one other offer for $50 plus shipping but I would probably jump on that $75 deal. They are not as cheap or as easy to come by as everybody kept telling me. Seems that $50 to $75 is a good price to me considering what they cost new.

I would still buy the HX35 though!

I looked at my notes and HTT told me $175 actually for a 12cm WG housing, the 14cm WG was $400 though.

I have the wastegate disconnected on mine, fuel is adjusted to get 25 boost. A wastegate is needed to controll max boost, if your not fueled to get over what you consider max boost you don't need it.
