Diesel and a side of Getrag...

That's what the ol girl had for lunch today Got the fuel pin to unstick this morning and rotated the cone to the deep side, and about 4 hours later the tranny was making quite a painful sound, hehe. Wonder if it had anything to do with all the smoke on my road today?Seriously, I knew the tranny was pretty well munched before I even went to look at the truck, so it was just a matter of time. I also got a core Getrag with the deal as well as a bearing/seal/syncro kit, so I'm off to pick up an input shaft in the morning and then over to the shop to rebuild the core. Wish I could swing the $ for the NV 4500 swap, but with the core, I'll only be out the input shaft and fluid, so under 200 bucks compared to 2000+....anyway, just thought I'd share. Happy Holidays everyone!

Put the NV4500 on lay-away. 100 easy payments of $19.99 each.

Yeah, mine hasn't gotten any quieter as I've turned up the power. I don't have the necessary equipment so I'm going to have find a shop that can do it right. (yeah, sure )

yeah, I'm lucky my buddy has a shop and great skill/experience. I'm gonna do it myself, but with his guidance. The noise came on all the sudden---prolly the input shaft bearing letting go; still got all the gears, but once I roll on in 3rd-5th, it gets real noisy

What does a "noisy" trans sound like. I don't really notice any noise down the road except for what sounds like a high pitched drone between 60-65, and a groan(no better way to describe it) as I let out on the clutch from a stop sometimes.

I think one of the bearing races let go---my guess is it'll be oval when the shaft comes out, so I have a pronounced knocking/vibration under load now. I've read that the getrag is generally a noisy, finicky beast on a good day, so maybe you're noises are just normal. Mine was shot when I got it and romping a bunch today prolly put it over the edge

I still have a getrag and have put 520hp/1245tq through it several times. So they might not be so bad after all. I am on my second one though. My first one went out due to lack of maintnance. I drive my pickup like I stole it everyday and I have had this tranny in for probably 2-3 years. It works great and there is noise.

When or if this one goes out I will probably do the swap.

Mine growls at low to mid RPM under load in 4th. Quiet otherwise, except when very cold in neutral. I think it's the input shaft bearing getting sloppy.

When I first heard noises I thought it was the tranny. I found out later that the sound was actually coming from my rearend. It was just traveling up through the drive terrain. I am now on my third reearend and my second tranny. When my tranny went out I heard a deffinate noise in 4th and 5th gear. All of the rest of them were fine. Popped the pto cover off and looked at the magnet and it was just a big pile of metal. Since I had a spare tranny I just put it in. Now my poor parts pickup is minus a rearend and tranny. All I have left is the front dana 60 and the motor. If any thing else goes out I am going to fix it with better parts like a dana80 and a nv4500 tranny.

The NV4500 (NV4500 HD) you want came in '94-'02 Dodge CTD trucks.

You sound like you are getting away pretty cheap. My input shaft just went south on my second transmission and with it , it took the clutch, p.p., Split the case on the trans. , and took out the countershaft as well. No gears left to speak of. I pulled everything out and took it to the shop and it was over 3 Grand.

The Getrag has front bearing oiling issue, especially under a load up a hill. If you hear a sqweek while pulling, you have about 2 months until the front countershaft bearing kicks out the front of the case. The Getrag is bearly adequite for a GM 6.2! And I hate the gear spacing.

Slight update--got the core tore down and cleaned. Found that the 3-4 syncro hub is toast--stands to reason since that's the hub closest to the input shaft so now I'm waiting on that hub...arghh!
