Coupler rebuild or borgeson shaft?
Coupler rebuild or borgeson shaft?
I noticed my truck not turning quite right last night, and upon furth investigation found the shaft to have ALOT of play in the coupler. Like, I can wiggle the shaft at least 1/4" in every direction, and turn it a good bit b4 it engages the steering box.
What's involved in the coupler rebuild and how long does it last? How about the borgeson?

Re:Coupler rebuild or borgeson shaft?
I rebuild the coupler for about $80 CAD and I can buy about 6 couplers before I pay for a Borg Joint.. ??? (Not knockin the Borg parts.. Top notch)
After I replaced the coupler and internals it drives pretty decent. Not totally tight like a universal joint, but its good enough for me..

Somewhere out there (I think in Oregon) is a place that sells a kit to weld a stock spicer joint onto the shaft in place of the coupler -- this gets rid of the couplers transverse slide ability, but I was pretty ticked when I got my Borgeson shaft (about $200 US from their web-site) and discovered that you can't grease the u-joint!
I heard the kit is about $80, I swear someone posted contact info on it on this site a while back.

Re:Coupler rebuild or borgeson shaft?
I rebuilt mine about a week ago...But I put a grease fitting in the side of the coupler. It will be a lot simpler to keep it packed full of grease that way. The way the factory should have done it in the first place!!
There's my idea...

Re:Coupler rebuild or borgeson shaft?
I know that my current truck is not a diesel but it is an '81 RC with a 6" Skyjacker lift and a 3" body lift and it's been driven like this for about 7 years now and have had no problems whatso ever with my borgeson shaft. It did cost more than a rebuild but the way I ook at it is this_ pay the money once for the right stuff or pay time and time again for the wrong stuff! Good luck with whatever you do!

Re:Coupler rebuild or borgeson shaft?
I just had a Borgeson shaft installed yesterday. The coupler was replaced just before I bought the truck and within a year it was already getting sloppy. I thought about rebuilding it for about $25.00- $30.00 or buying a new factory coupler, neither made sense to me, so Borgeson it was. I had a Flaming river shaft ordered but it was taking to long to show up and my steering was just getting worse. I can relax a bit now when I'm driving.
Re:Coupler rebuild or borgeson shaft?
One of the guys I work with, has a son with a 91 ram and he rebuilt his coupler about 4-5 months ago and it's already starting to get loose. The Flaming River shaft and coupler that I ordered was a few bucks cheaper then the Borgeson, and I have read that it's built better, but it was taking to long to get to the parts shop, so I ended up with the Borgeson, and I'm happy with it ;D..... so far.... it's been close to a week :
Re:Coupler rebuild or borgeson shaft?
Once you take that goofy factory coupling apart for the first time, you will understand why it doesn't last. It might be alrignt on a lighter truck but these trucks are hard on steering parts anyway. My steering box is shot now and has been for some time.
