steering shaft coupler

I'm replacing my steering shaft with the borgeson shaft. I have the shaft off but I can't get the coupler off! Is there some kind of puller or spreader that I can use? I really don't want to replace the gear too just because I can't seperate them! Thanks, Rich

Thanks for your reply. I did punch out a little plastic pin. I think it's just corroded on. Rich

yes, there is a pin. There is a picture of it in the how-to in the sticky.

Be careful removing the roll pin. Wedge a block of wood or something in behind it before you start pounding on it or you'll be replacing the input shaft seal too.

I'm not really a moron!!!, honest I'm not. I can't beleive I thought that plastic plug INSIDE the pin was the pin! Thanks for your responses, ( I punched it out) ,now I must to my wife that she married a fool. Rich P.S. Is it a coincidence that I understood the instructions after I gave up for the day and have 3 beers in me?

As long as it's not leaking after you're finished with it, you're doing good! There's more than one way to botch this job.

Enjoy the Borgeson shaft, it was one of the best things I did. i was tired of driving like a blind man, drifting from side to side and bumping the steering to keep it in my lane. I racked up a million miles of tight steering on my shaft...

To hook up the rag joint do I re-use the two flat pieces again? I can't believe the column end connects to the material disc then the shaft connects to the disc with no real metal to metal bolt connections! Rich

You could replace the rag joint if you wanted, but as long as it's not obviously degraded - frayed, dry-rotted, whatever - I wouldn't bother. They are plenty strong enough for what they do, which is not much except provide a flexible connection to the shaft.

What if I lined up the holes of the column and shaft and bolt them together with the rag between them? Rich

then you wouldn't havethe flex needed if the cab and frame sart moving. remember the rubberbushings that keep the cab mounted on the frame? i'd leave the rag joint alone, or repace it if it's degraded.
