steering coupler rebuild (little cardboard squares)

im rebuilding me steering coupler and i noticed the new kit comes with some little cardboard squares that seem to fit neatly in the same slot the shoes from the rebuild kit ride in.

the existing pieces have no such cardboard and the rebuild thread in the sticky makes no mention.

any ideas?

maybe its for a different application?

I'm pretty sure those are just the corrosion inhibitor thingy's that they put in there to keep the un-treated steel shoes from getting all rusty till you install em. I was a MOPAR parts guy for 10+ years and a lot of parts bags had little squares or special paper around bare metal parts.

Too bad that they didn't come up with the idea to install a sheet of corrosion inhibiting cardboard between the roof and liner sheet metal before they welded it together, might keep them from rusting from the inside out.
