Converting 93 alternator to external regulator?

I read in the sticky section on how to do this, and both posts were very unclear.

First, if you convert the 92-93 trucks to the external, where do you get the power from. It just says hook to ignition hot. I'm pretty sure that means any hot in the "run" position of the ignition switch.
My question is where is a good source for this? I don't want to be cutting wires and testing all over the place looking for it. and also, is this even a good idea? I keep reading horror stories of this setup frying batteries, blowing headlights, etc.

Second, if you convert the alternator to an internal regulator using the transpo setup, where do you get the transpo part and will it work on the 92-93 alternator? The guy that did it had a 1990 external style that he did it to.

My 93 has crapped out and I need to convert it to something...

Before you go to the trouble of converting, have you checked the crank sensor and the ASD relay? Also, are you sure the alternator is good (full field it to see if it will charge).

Also check out Jim Lane's conversion to an single wire Leese Neville as an alternative.

The alternator checked good at the parts house on their test bench. I have no voltage coming into the fields while the truck is running.

I know its gotta be the crank sensor, ASD relay, or the ECU. I just don't know how to check those.

I think I've narrowed it down to the crank sensor. I swapped out the ASD relay with a known good one, no change. Did not have voltage at my green wires that go to the alternator.

I plugged in a factory tac that I have and it wont work. And on this note, my truck has a flat 4 connector under the dash and my tac has a rectangular 6 pin. they must have changed this between 92 and 93

Crank sensor was about $61 at Cummins when I bought one last month. Dodge wanted about $106.

yep. I checked dodge today. 107 bucks. What does it take to replace? Besides pulling pulleys and belt I mean. I can't find anything about it in my service manual. Only a write up for the gas motors.

Don't even need to do that. Just remove and replace, set gap to 0.050" with non-ferrous feeler gauge (folded over matchbook cover is close enough).

Check wiring harness closely before spending money.

When I did mine last month, I removed the fan, fan shroud, belt, and fan clutch pulley so that I could get to some of the bolts holding the wiring on. It can be done without doing all that but it's a lot easier with all that stuff out of the way. I used a doubled over business card to check the clearance before I pulled the old one and then used the same doubled card to set the clearance for the new one.

Do you still have that Cummins part number handy?
