Im going to see about adding a external voltage regulator to my 1992 dodge diesel. What I need to know is what size wire will I need? Where will they go?

If you are going to be putting it in, it can go where ever you want it to go. The one in my 91.5 is on the firewall directly over the valve covers.

The wiring is not that heavy. Without actually measuring, I would guess 16 ga., perhaps 14.

No, the PCM is diesel only. Did you follow Infidel's directions on the VR install? There's no reason putting an external VR on there would smoke the PCM if you did it right.

Did you disconnect the wires that go from the alternator to the PCM?

I don't have the diagram in front of me but I would think you need to disconnect the wires that go to the pcm that you are now connecting the VR to. Since the PCM isn't providing field excitation anymore you don't want it to be connected to the alternator anymore.
