Cone Grind Conundrum
I don't think I am ever going to be able to figure out this diesel stuff. So I grind my pin, my truck comes alive, I drive it pretty hard around town all week, and I get 17.84 MPG. Every time I do something on the truck it reacts differently than I expected. How the mileage can go up with the pin grind, maybe that plus the smoke adjustment = better mileage, I dunno. Maybe these engines prefer running at higher RPM's because they run so much leaner than when they are lugged. Maybe when i finally rebuild the overdrive I can drive 90MPH and get 25MPG

I've found that the POD's respond well to higher RPM when you want fuel economy. I keep 'er in 4th until 50 mph just cruising around (unless I'm trying to be quiet).

Seems counter intuitive doesn't it? Yet there it is, have your cake and eat it too. My truck is now making enough power to hurt itself at will (or is it me hurting it?). I think I need to get the old fellow on the dyno soon, at lease before I break the next weakest part!

If you can keep your RPM "in the zone" you'll have good mileage and, great performance/response when needed.....
These old girls like to be run in the 1700-1900RPM range while in direct drive (1:1) for auto's that is 3rd gear, for the stick guys, that's 4th gear.
Once you break into the 2000 RPM range you can usually move up a gear and make use of the "overdrive ratio" so to speak.
