Clutch job Q

I am doing the clutch today, and i have a Q,
Is it possible to leave the trans cross member attached to the trans, and just slide it back on the frame rails enough to pull the clutch parts????
It looks like it would work this way
I have all bolts hand loose except for 2 on engine to trans, all else is out,
shifter stuff, speedo cable, slave cylinder, ect
I am waiting for some words!!!
And wow it took only 45 min without air tools to get this far!!!
Just me,
1989 1 ton 5 sp getrag
Peter.

you should take it out.
you'll have more room to work and you should clean it up, if there is any old oil or dirt build-up on it clean it off, that stuff hold heat, and change the fluid. check for shaft play, check the seals etc. you wouldn't want to pull it again for something you could have done the first time.

I had a 73 Ford that if you lifted the carpet/mats you could pull a 2ft + 3ft sheetmetal cover and do that , not sure about that yr but you can look from under the truck and see if there's a seam with nuts around the edge , if not the trans will hit the trans tunel and that will not work .
The ferd also had a devorsed transfercase , now if we could get all the good ideas into one truck that would be great .
I bought the Cummins not the Dodge .

You must have a 2wd. The 4wd's have a three piece trans crossmember where you can just remove the center piece, then drop the trans. I would get the trans out of there to have all the room I could get to bolt up the new or resurfaced flywheel etc. Then with the getrag out you can remove it's top cover to inspect and then replace the top cover gasket (avail from www.quad4x4.com) and fill with 4.5-5qts of your lube of choice.

What clutch did you end up getting?

I just went with the south bend clutch, stock size, I am a little dissapointed in the fact that the disc is a 1/2" smaller than the stock one i took out, and I must add this
The stock clutch shows VERY little wear, truck has 250k+ miles, and i would guess that the clutch would work for another 250k miles
The throughout bearing was dry, so time for new stuff,,
And i think that i found the getrag rattle,,,
The spline on the disc moves 1/8" with no resistance making a rattle noise!!
I am dropping off the flywheel for resurfacing on tue,
flywheel shows NO sigh of wear though,
Peter,
I took the cross member out as well
box on the ground waiting for tue/wed eve
Less than 2 hrs to get on ground

The Con-O clutch is smaller than stock, but it will hold the power.

You're pretty close to me, let me know if you need a hand.
