Clutch Job

I have an 89 2 wd cummins, getrag combo
Do i need to remove the crossmember from the trans to just do the clutch?
Or can i just unbolt it from the frame and slide the whole combo back???
Peter.

I can say since I never tried it but you may be able to get enough clearance by just sliding it back. Probably won't hurt to try it. Worst case is that you still have to drop the crossmember afterwords. Good luck and be careful under there.

I always remove the crossmember and then the tranny, but I have a nice tranny jack with all the attachments and a smooth cement floor.
You could try just sliding things back to see if you get the clearance to change the clutch, but the worst case scenario is not just having to drop the crossmember and trans, it is dropping the trans or having it slip and catch the input shaft and break the nose cone. Good luck

I will go out on a limb and say you will have to drop it, because the top of tranny will hit on the floorboard, and you would have to jack up the back of the motor to get it to line back up, I think it would be better off to drop it from the start JMO
