checking tps on 1991 cummins

I was trying to check the adjustment on my tps and noticed with center wire going to the to the tps I should have around .6 volts to 1.20 volts but I have 8.0 volts at rest and as I move the throttle to wide open it goes up to 10.0 volts. Am I checking this wrong Or is this the root of my problem??

Where do you have your voltmeter connected? The TPS is a 5 volt circuit. If you go from the purple/white wire to ground you should get 5 volts. If you are getting 12 volts there you have a problem in the wiring (bad hack job by a previous owner?) or a bad 5 volt supply in the PCM.

Black/blue should be a good ground.

sorry, I had the meter on a/c but I rechecked and found with a safety pin shoved in the red wire (middle) and plugged into the tps I have 4.2 volts at rest and I open the throttle the voltage stays the same, I read that I should see some change in voltage.

Yes, that voltage should change with throttle position.

Sounds like it's bad. The voltage should change on the orange/blue wire as the throttle linkage moves.

Kit read the how to stickies. If I knew how to bring one of the links up on here I would. Some of the guys have wired in adjustable pots and did away with the expensive tps. The most of them buy the pots at Radio Shack for just a few bucks mount it on the dash. It save you money and gets the tps out of the way of the pump, plus it's adjustable to sum degree. Just read the stickies and you''ll find it. Good luck.

The pot fix is the best way to go. Does not cost 200 dollars and is adjustable.
