a/c help
ok guys when driving down the road my a/c is good around 40deg. But when idling at lights or store it gets to blowing about 60deg. I'm thinking of putting a elect. fan in front of the rad behind the grille, does anyone know if there is room? I will retain the stock clutch fan and put the elect. on a switch. Think this will help? THANKS

did you clean out your HVAC box?

Almost sounds like maybe your clutch fan isn't working?
Our 93 has great R-12 A/C and it only goes up about 5* idling or at a stop light.

I installed my 2 electric fans to get ram air for just the same reason however being intercooled you will be limited in space behind the grille.

How is your refrigerant charge?
Is your hot water shutoff valve working?
Also check your idle speed, it could be a bit low a fast idle solenoid would help turning your compressor fast enough.
You could mount a remote condenser under the truck with fans and a shroud and eliminate the front condenser all together, I have built a few systems using this idea.
I would install a High Pressure cutout switch in-case the fan failed to keep your system from going nuclear.

When I used to work on Transit Busses I noticed that very few of the air conditioning systems had the condenser cooled by the engine fan, they were either electric or hydraulic driven fans.
You can even get a 12-volt hermetic compressor that doesn't require the engine to be running.
Here you could install a chill plate in your cab and turn it into a refrigerated cab.

Just some ideas.

I know you all are talking about earlier modles than mine but I have the exact same issue. Crusing is >40F and when I come off the freeway or drive around town it's barely in the mid 50's sometimes in the 60's and the fan runs just not like I think it should. I wanted to put a seperate switch on the fan to control when it's on manually but haven't got around to investigating how to do it on the '03's. My systemis charged, all evap areas are clean and the cores up front are all spotless as well. My older 82 GMC had freezing cold air even at an idle and this thing doesn't do that good out running. Wonder why Chrysler/Dodge couldn't come up with a better idea for this cool thing. Maybe it has a LOT to do with the switch from R12 to R134.

yes I have cleaned out the hvac box. Is there any way to test the fan clutch? I turned it by hand and it has resistance it does'nt just spin in other words. On a hot day going down the road you can hear the fan come on and off it's pretty loud. any ideas THANKS GUYS
I had the same battle with my a/c at the beginning of summer. It turned out that the area between the intercooler and the radiator was packed with grass and mud.I used compressed air to clean it out and washed everything down with simple green.I can get down to 38f idling now.
